Getting Started
Over 80 Years And We’re Just Getting Started
OBMI story begins in 1936 when Wilfred (Wil) Onions returned to his native Bermuda, accompanied by McGill University friend Val Bouchard. The two ambitious architects came to Bermuda to turn their creative visions into living, enduring history. That was the start of the original Onions Bouchard.
Onions and Bouchard began as architects of private residences across the island, from which developed the influential “Bermuda style,” homes, now a characteristic of the island. In time, they defined the internationally acclaimed Bermuda design style and instituted a “sense of place” culture across the island.
In the 1950s they evolved into the commercial sector and were joined by John McCulloch, who expanded the firm’s footprint in the Caribbean. In the 60s the firm enhanced its portfolio by adding interior design, landscape architecture and master planning to their suite of services. This was the beginning of OBMI.
Today, OBMI is an esteemed global firm with offices throughout the Caribbean and beyond. The Bermuda office is run by Directors Michele Smith and Colin Campbell, who manage a team of experienced professionals dedicated to creative solutions and quality designs
